Dahlia

Dahlia

I am proud this October to offer you bouquets with flowers from the region, such as dahlias , hydrangeas, and marigolds.

THE DAHLIAS

From pompoms to cacti, from dwarfs to giants, from the softest colors to the most flamboyant hues... the dahlia is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating and generous flowers in our gardens for bouquets. Native to Mexico, this member of the Asteraceae (or Compositae) family has conquered the world with its astonishing diversity and spectacular blooms, which brighten flowerbeds and bouquets from summer until the first frosts.

An Aztec History and Incredible Diversity

Did you know that the dahlia was cultivated by the Aztecs over 2,000 years ago? They used its tubers for food (they are rich in inulin) and its juice for medicinal purposes. It arrived in Europe in the 18th century, first in Spain, where it was named in honor of the Swedish botanist Andreas Dahl.

Its success was immediate, especially after the discovery of the first double-flowered dahlia in 1808 and, later, of the Juarezii dahlia, the first cactus dahlia , which revived the worldwide craze.

Today, there are thousands of varieties, classified according to the shape of their flowers:

  • Decorative dahlias: Double flowers, often very large, with flat petals.

  • Pompon or ball dahlias: Small and perfectly spherical flowers, shaped like a honeycomb.

  • Cactus or semi-cactus dahlias: Their ligules (petals) are rolled, tapered and pointed, giving a disheveled appearance.

  • Collarette dahlias: Composed of a single row of large petals, surrounding a row of much shorter petals (the collarette).

  • Single dahlias: Resembling large daisies, with a single row of petals around the central disc.
